Alex began his DJ’ing career at the tender age of 14 doing mobile discos in 1989, he then went on to Radio after standing in for someone on a show for Wear FM in Sunderland.
Then on the 14th February 1997 Kiss 105 was born out of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Kiss 105 was a Dance Music station that was part of a new breed of regional radio stations and Alex became part of the team by presenting the Kiss Networked overnight show and then went on to do Drivetime.
Later that year Kiss was rebranded as Galaxy 105 and it was under this new brand that Alex was given the now legendary Alex Pepper Evening Show, and continued to dominate Yorkshire’s Airwaves until 2003.
He revolutionised evening radio with features such as “Fly or Die” where he would showcase the hottest new tracks. Listeners could phone in and chat to Alex then vote on air for their favourite of two featured tracks dubbed the “Champion” or the “Challenger”.
Each show was finished off by “In the Mix @ 9” where Alex would do a LIVE mix every night, often playing tunes people had only requested that evening – recordings of some of these mixes can be found on his Mixcloud.
A regular of the clubbing scene, Alex toured Yorkshire every weekend as he was a very popular booking to have. Many would remember him for his days at Majestic in Leeds, for “Alex in Wonderland” and “Alex vs FNP”. Alex also did summer tours in Ibiza and back in the UK with “Pepper on the Prom”.
After many happy years at Galaxy, Alex went on to present the drive time show for Radio Aire with Liz Whitaker often covering the breakfast show with her too. Alex also presented the Yorkshire edition of FloorFillers, which was broadcast on Radio Aire, Hallam FM and Viking FM simultaneously, and also saw Alex hosting a FloorFillers branded club night at Eden in Ibiza, which did the impossible, by outselling Judge Jules’ Judgement Sunday in its opening week! Shortly afterwards, Alex went on to present a show for Radio Frequency in Leeds, bringing us on to “The Bit Inbetween…”
